Man arrested on assault charges in Marathon

MARATHON, NY — New York State Police arrested Zacharia W. McCutcheon, 35, of Seneca Falls, following a domestic dispute in the village of Marathon on July 1, 2026.

Troopers were dispatched by the Cortland County 911 Center to a report of a physical domestic in progress at a residence on West Main.

An investigation determined that a verbal argument escalated into a physical altercation.

McCutcheon is accused of striking and kicking two people and choking one of the victims while at the residence.

While at the residence, McCutcheon complained of pain and was transported by Marathon EMS to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center for an evaluation.

During the ambulance transport, McCutcheon became combative and kicked a trooper in the face.

Troopers were assisted by Cortland City Police once they arrived at the hospital.

After being medically cleared, McCutcheon was charged with two counts of assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor, and criminal obstruction of breathing, a misdemeanor.

McCutcheon was processed then turned over to the Cortland County Jail for centralized arraignment.
