MILLBURY, MA — Two off-duty Springfield police officers rescued a driver from a burning vehicle following a four-vehicle crash on the Massachusetts Turnpike on May 1.
Captain Julio Toledo and Detective Denise Toledo were traveling westbound on the turnpike when they encountered the crash, with one car fully engulfed in flames.
The officers jumped into action and assisted in first aid until paramedics and Massachusetts State Police troopers arrived.
The Toledos helped save a man in the burning vehicle who suffered from smoke inhalation and was attempting to retrieve his phone from his car.
Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence E. Akers publicly recognized the officers for their actions.
Akers received information about the incident from a Massachusetts State Trooper who stated the Toledos’ actions saved a life.
