FORT EDWARD, NY — A man was arrested Saturday after surveillance footage captured him smashing windows and entering the Washington County Municipal Building while it was closed, according to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy.

John E. Sawn III, 47, of Gansevoort, was taken into custody following the incident at the County Municipal Building in Fort Edward.

Deputies responded to the facility following a report of damage to the building.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered that at least two doors had their windows smashed out and that someone had entered the building.

While the building was being cleared, the Washington County Department of Public Safety reviewed surveillance footage, which showed the suspect smashing the windows with a piece of cinder block and then entering the building.

Deputies immediately recognized the individual as Sawn and located him shortly thereafter in an area where he was known to frequent.

He was arrested and transported to the Washington County Law Enforcement Center in Fort Edward for processing.

Sawn was charged with burglary in the third degree, a class D felony; criminal mischief in the second degree, a class D felony; and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor.

He was arraigned through centralized arraignment and remanded to the Washington County Jail without bail.
