EPHRATA, PA — A 31-year-old Pennsylvania man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after police observed his vehicle swerving on Route 222.

Officer Zachary Crills stopped a green Subaru Forester around 10:35 p.m. Saturday near mile marker 35.8 after noticing the vehicle swerving erratically in the travel lane.

The vehicle’s windshield wipers were operating at high speed despite the absence of precipitation, according to police.

The driver, Cody Michael Root of Pennsylvania, told Officer Crills he was unaware the windshield wipers were on.

Officer Crills suspected impairment and consulted with a Drug Recognition Expert, who recommended Root undergo a blood test.

Root refused the blood test, police said.

Root faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance and disregard for traffic lane.

The charges will be presented before District Judge Jonathan Heisse.
