NEWARK, NY — Police arrested a man Wednesday after he allegedly swung a baseball bat at several people, including a juvenile, following a social media dispute.
Ashton Norsen, 18, of Newark, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance 3rd degree, assault 2nd degree, menacing 2nd degree, resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a child and harassment 2nd degree.
Newark Police Department responded to the 200 block of Van Buren Street at approximately 1:25 p.m. for a disturbance in progress.
Police received an update that one of the parties was armed with a baseball bat.
Officers observed a red vehicle leaving the scene and stopped it, detaining the driver and passenger.
The investigation revealed Norsen came to the location to engage in a mutual fist fight after a dispute on social media.
Norsen retrieved a baseball bat and swung it several times at several people, one of whom was a juvenile, according to police.
Norsen fled as officers attempted to detain him but was caught within 10 feet.
Two Newark Police Department officers sustained minor injuries while taking Norsen into custody and were treated on scene by EMS.
During a search at the police station, officers found suspected crack cocaine in Norsen’s possession.
The amount of crack cocaine found was consistent in weight and packaging with someone engaged in the sale of a controlled substance, police said.
Norsen is currently on probation, and probation officials placed a probation detainer on him.
Norsen is being held at the Wayne County Jail.
