Man arrested on burglary charge in Cortland

CORTLAND, NY — A 27-year-old man has been arrested following a weapon complaint and forced entry incident at an apartment complex on Kellogg Road.

Police responded to a report on April 28, 2026, of a male subject who had allegedly forced entry into a neighboring apartment while armed with a knife.

An ongoing dispute between neighbors regarding excessive noise escalated when the suspect allegedly broke the apartment door’s security chain and entered the residence without permission.

According to the victim, the suspect entered several feet into the apartment while displaying a knife and yelling profanities before leaving the residence.

A three-year-old child was present inside the apartment during the incident and was reportedly frightened by the encounter.

Responding officers located the suspect, identified as Ian D. Kilts, of Cortland, at the apartment complex and took him into custody without incident.

Kilts was charged with burglary in the second degree, menacing in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal mischief.

Kilts was arraigned in Cortland City Court and released on his own recognizance.

He is scheduled to reappear in Cortland City Court on June 3, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.
