Man arrested on weapons charges in Kingston

KINGSTON, NY — A Kingston man was arrested and charged with multiple felonies after police responded to a domestic dispute late Tuesday night.

Shakir R. John, 30, of Kingston, was taken into custody at approximately 11:40 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot at Broadway and West Chester Street.

Kingston police were initially called to an apartment at 3 Garraghan Drive for a reported domestic dispute.

While officers were responding, it was reported that a possible suspect in an assault had left the location in a vehicle.

Police located the vehicle in the parking lot with a driver matching the suspect’s description.

The subject was detained while officers interviewed the reporting party on Garraghan Drive.

John allegedly punched the victim several times during the domestic dispute.

Police found a stolen and loaded semi-automatic pistol in his vehicle.

John was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a loaded weapon, a felony; fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony; fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor; second-degree obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor; and second-degree aggravated harassment, a misdemeanor.

He was processed at police headquarters and held for Kingston City Court.

In City Court Wednesday morning, John was issued a full stay away order of protection and remanded to the Ulster County Jail.
