NEW HARTFORD, NY — A traffic stop on Commercial Drive Thursday night led to the arrest of a woman on felony DWI charges after police found a juvenile in her vehicle.
Nyzaiah Jones, 24, of Utica, was stopped at 10 p.m. for a vehicle and traffic law violation, according to the New Hartford Police Department.
During the stop, an officer detected signs of impairment while speaking with Jones, police said.
Jones was administered standardized field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated, police said.
A 15-year-old female juvenile was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the stop, according to police.
Jones was transported to the New Hartford Police Department and charged with felony driving while intoxicated with a child 15 years of age or younger in the motor vehicle under Leandra’s Law, misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, drinking alcohol inside a motor vehicle, operating an uninspected motor vehicle, inadequate headlights, operating without a valid driver license and endangering the welfare of a child.
Child protective services were contacted and the juvenile was placed in the care of a relative, police said.
Jones was transported to the Oneida County Jail to await arraignment in Oneida County Centralized Arraignment Part Court.
