Swatting incident investigated in Berkeley Township

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ — Police are investigating a swatting incident that prompted a large emergency response to a Holiday City residence.

The Berkeley Township Police Department responded to an address in the Holiday City section at approximately 8 a.m. Thursday following a report of shots fired with injured victims.

The caller also claimed the suspect was possibly traveling to Lacey Township to commit additional crimes.

Multiple units quickly arrived on scene and responding officers contacted the homeowner and immediately entered the home to deal with the potential threat.

Officers determined there were no victims and that no incident had occurred at the residence.

Responding officers simultaneously located an address in Forked River connected to the call, prompting Lacey Township Police to respond to that location.

Officers determined there was no issue at that residence.

Further investigation revealed the call was likely a swatting incident, in which false reports of violence are made to police to prompt a large emergency response.

Follow-up investigation was initiated to locate the source and the caller.

The incident remains under investigation.
