BARNEGAT, NJ — Police are warning residents about a text message scam claiming recipients have committed traffic violations.
The Barnegat Police Department said residents have reported receiving text messages designed to look like official court notices from the State of New Jersey.
The fraudulent messages claim the recipient committed a traffic violation and instruct them to scan a QR code or visit a website to make a payment.
Police said the messages are not legitimate and are part of an ongoing scam.
Law enforcement agencies and courts do not issue traffic violations through text messages, according to police.
Authorities said they will not direct motorists to pay fines through QR codes or unofficial websites.
