Man charged in hit-and-run crash in Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, NY — New York State Police have charged a man with a felony in connection with a hit-and-run collision that seriously injured a woman in a motorized wheelchair.

Terry R. VanValkenburg, 54, of West Chazy, was charged Feb. 15 with a felony Vehicle and Traffic Law violation.

The collision occurred Feb. 12 at approximately 5:42 p.m. on Ampersand Drive in Plattsburgh.

State Police said VanValkenburg was traveling northbound on Ampersand Drive in a green 2008 Jeep when he failed to observe the victim operating a motorized wheelchair who was traveling southbound.

The vehicle struck the victim, and VanValkenburg failed to stop after the collision, police said.

The victim was transported to UVM Medical Center, where she is listed in stable condition.

VanValkenburg was located and transported to State Police Plattsburgh for processing.

He was arraigned in Town of Schuyler Falls Court and remanded to the Clinton County Jail without bail.
