Check fraud suspect arrested in North Haven

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A New Haven man was arrested on an outstanding warrant stemming from a check fraud investigation that began in September.

North Haven patrol officers were dispatched to the area of Moulthrop Street on Sept. 16 in response to a report of check fraud.

Officers met with the victim, who reported several checks had been deposited at a local post office and that they subsequently received notification that one of the checks had been altered.

The victim advised that the altered check was attempted to be deposited in the New Haven area.

Following an investigation, officers identified a suspect as Deren James Newton, 19, of New Haven.

An arrest warrant was completed and submitted by officers and was subsequently approved and signed.

On Feb. 7, 2026, officers served the active arrest warrant and took Newton into custody.

Newton was formally charged with forgery in the second degree and larceny in the third degree.
