MANSFIELD, MA — Two people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon at a busy intersection.
The Southeastern Massachusetts Regional 911 District received several calls reporting a crash with an ejection at about 12 p.m. at the intersection of Commercial Street (Route 140) and School Street.
Mansfield police and fire personnel responded to find a sedan and pickup truck with heavy front-end damage.
The driver of the pickup truck was ejected from the vehicle and taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening.
The driver of the sedan was taken by ambulance to Boston Medical Center – South in Brockton with serious injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening.
Several witnesses and motorists were rendering aid when first responders arrived.
The preliminary investigation indicates the sedan was traveling at a high rate of speed and drove into the breakdown lane on Route 140 to get around traffic.
The sedan proceeded through a red light and struck the pickup truck that was heading westbound on School Street through the intersection, causing the truck to roll onto its side and eject the driver.
A traffic signal pole was struck, knocking out all signals.
The intersection remained closed while repairs were made.
The crash remains under investigation by Mansfield police.
Charges are expected to be filed against the sedan driver at the conclusion of the investigation.
