Police investigator shoots armed suspect in Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, NY — A Binghamton police investigator shot an armed suspect during a physical struggle on Amsbry Street on Feb. 5.

The incident occurred at 4:43 p.m. when a member of the Binghamton Police Department Special Investigations Unit was conducting an investigation on the north side of the city.

The investigator encountered a male suspect armed with a handgun on Amsbry Street.

A physical struggle ensued between the two.

The investigator fired a single gunshot from their department-issued firearm.

The male suspect sustained a single gunshot wound to the ankle.

Aid was rendered to the suspect at the scene, and he was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for medical treatment.

A handgun was recovered from the scene.

The suspect remains under medical care in police custody with non-life-threatening injuries.

The police investigator was treated and released from an area hospital.

A portion of Amsbry Street remains closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic while the investigation continues.

Police said there is no threat to public safety and no other suspects are being sought.

The matter is being handled by the Binghamton Police Department Detective Bureau in consultation with the Broome County District Attorney’s Office.

Criminal charges are anticipated upon conclusion of the investigation.
