JAMESTOWN, NY — An 18-year-old student was taken into custody Wednesday morning after a loaded handgun was found in his backpack during an investigation at Jamestown High School.
At about 11:00 a.m., the Jamestown High School Resource Officer and a school administrator were investigating a report of a student possibly vaping in a bathroom.
The student, identified as Narade Gumbs Jr. of Jamestown, was informed that his backpack would be searched as part of the investigation.
During the search, a loaded handgun was found inside the backpack.
Gumbs was immediately detained and removed from the school without further incident.
He is charged with one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree (high capacity ammunition feeding device), one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (loaded firearm), and one count of criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds.
Authorities said Gumbs is being held pending arraignment.
