DARIEN, CT — Police are warning residents about scammers impersonating law enforcement officers to defraud victims.
The Darien Police Department said scammers often rely on fear and urgency to pressure victims into acting quickly.
These calls may sound convincing and can include spoofed phone numbers, badge numbers or officer names.
Police said legitimate law enforcement will never pressure residents to resolve matters over the phone, text or email, demand payment, or request gift cards or cryptocurrency.
Residents who receive a suspicious call should not engage, not argue and not provide information, according to police.
Police advise ending the call and independently verifying by contacting the department using a trusted phone number.
