MIDDLETOWN, CT — A 56-year-old man was arrested after allegedly striking a woman in the face near Melilli Plaza on Nov. 1.
Middletown police responded to a report of an assault at approximately 2:21 p.m.
The victim told officers she was assaulted by a man and provided a description and direction of travel.
Officers located the suspect near 500 Main Street and identified him as Joseph Lopez of Middletown.
Police determined the victim was leaving Democratic Headquarters on Court Street and was walking 15 to 20 feet behind Lopez.
The victim did not know Lopez but closed the distance between them.
Lopez abruptly turned around, faced the victim and made a statement about her walking too fast, according to police.
The victim reported Lopez struck her in the face twice before walking away.
She sustained minor injuries to the face but did not require medical attention.
Lopez was arrested and charged with breach of peace in the second degree.
He was held on $25,000 surety bond and presented in court on Nov. 3.
Police said there is no evidence to suggest the incident was politically motivated.
