GLENMONT, NY — Two people were arrested Tuesday after allegedly attempting to scam a resident through a fake federal investigator scheme, according to the Bethlehem Police Department.
Bailey C. Martinez, 24, of Albany, and Deamonte E. Brown, 25, of Albany, were taken into custody at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 28.
The incident began when a Glenmont resident received a phone call from someone claiming to be an investigator with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
The caller told the victim their bank account had been compromised and that an “investigator” would come to retrieve their debit card.
The suspect instructed the victim to place the debit card inside an envelope, leave it in the mailbox at the residence, and stated a white sport utility vehicle would come pick up the card.
Bethlehem Police officers were monitoring the situation and observed a white 2016 Nissan SUV with New York registration arrive at the residence and retrieve the envelope.
The vehicle was stopped shortly thereafter, and both Martinez and Brown were taken into custody.
Martinez and Brown were charged with attempted grand larceny 4th and conspiracy 6th.
Both suspects were arraigned in Town of Bethlehem Court and released under the supervision of Albany County Probation.
A return date was set for Nov. 18.
