NEWPORT — The Newport Fire Department held an open house Saturday, drawing more than 200 visitors to view the city’s new fire truck and participate in community activities.

The long-awaited fire truck arrived Friday afternoon. Voters approved its purchase in March 2022, and it was designed with features intended to allow it to operate with fewer firefighters.

When department members traveled to the Midwest to inspect the truck a few years ago, they found the manufacturer did not build it to specifications and rejected it. After a couple of years, Newport finally received the truck.

The open house featured food from Buggy’s Breakfast, a bounce house provided by Country Boys Inflatable Rentals, and face painting and balloon animals by three students from North Country Union High School’s art program.

Newport Police Department dispatcher Emily attended to talk with children and parents about calling for help in emergencies.

Glover Volunteer Fire Department brought a piece of the World Trade Center for display, and Green Mountain Aerial Solutions provided drone photography.

Vermont Fire Academy instructors allowed guests to observe training evolutions during the event.
