Glenmont crash kills 88-year-old woman

GLENMONT — Officers from the Bethlehem Police Department responded to Route 9W at approximately 12:48 p.m. Friday for a motor vehicle driving erratically.

While officers were responding to this incident, they were advised that a crash had occurred on Route 9W in the area of Wemple Road.

The preliminary investigation shows that a vehicle operated by William H. Morehouse, 83, of West Coxsackie, was traveling northbound on Route 9W and crossed over into the southbound lane of traffic, striking a Bethlehem Senior Transportation Service vehicle head-on.

The driver of the Bethlehem Senior Transportation Service vehicle, Christina Doran, 73, of Delmar, was not injured.

A passenger in the vehicle, Jean R. Hipwell, 88, of Glenmont, was transported to St. Peter’s Hospital due to chest pain, where she later died.

Morehouse was transported to St. Peter’s Hospital with a leg injury.

During the investigation, police discovered that Morehouse was also involved in an additional crash at approximately 12:46 p.m. on Route 9W in the area of Church Road.

The initial crash was caused when Morehouse’s vehicle crossed over into the southbound lane, side-swiping another vehicle.

The operator of that vehicle was identified as Paul A. Moore, 74, of Hannacroix.

Neither driver was injured in the first crash.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
