Shandaken truck driver charged in 3-vehicle crash that critically injured woman

SHANDAKEN — New York State Police have charged a New Jersey truck driver in connection with a three-vehicle collision that left a woman in critical condition and hospitalized three other people.

The crash occurred Saturday at approximately 1:39 p.m. on State Route 28 in the Town of Shandaken, Ulster County.

Oscar A. Madrid, 41, of Somerset, N.J., was operating a 2018 Freightliner eastbound on State Route 28 when it struck a 2020 Mazda, according to state police.

The impact caused the Mazda to cross into the westbound lane and collide with a 2025 Subaru traveling westbound.

The Subaru’s operator, a 37-year-old male, and his passenger, a 36-year-old female, both of Wappingers Falls, sustained minor injuries and were transported to Kingston Health Alliance Hospital for evaluation.

The Mazda’s operator, a 28-year-old male, and his passenger, a 35-year-old female, both of Newburgh, sustained serious injuries.

Both were airlifted from the scene to Albany Medical Center.

The 35-year-old female is listed in critical but stable condition.

The 28-year-old male driver is listed in stable condition.

Madrid and his passenger, a 33-year-old male from Fords, N.J., were not injured.

Madrid was charged with reckless endangerment in the second degree, reckless driving and vehicle and traffic law violations.

He was transported to State Police Kingston for processing and released on an appearance ticket.

Madrid is scheduled to appear in the Town of Shandaken Court on October 28 at 7:00 p.m.
