Man falls 100 feet into cement silo in Catskill

CATSKILL — A 23-year-old man fell approximately 100 feet into an abandoned cement silo while illegally exploring the Lehigh Cement Plant on Aug. 1.

State Police responded to the incident at 6388 Route 9W at approximately 10:26 p.m.

Luke H. Apy of Malta and Lucas Marrello, 21, of Cambridge had traveled to the abandoned silos to camp and explore the area, according to investigators.

The two men breached a perimeter fence to illegally enter the property.

Once inside, they climbed to the top of one of the cement silos.

Apy removed a piece of plywood covering an opening and subsequently fell into the silo.

Apy was conscious and alert but unable to exit the silo.

Emergency personnel from the Twin Cloves Technical Rescue Team extricated Apy from the silo.

He was evaluated at the scene by Catskill EMS and transported to Albany Medical Center for further medical treatment.

Marrello was arrested and charged with criminal trespass in the third degree, a Class B misdemeanor.

He was processed at State Police Catskill and released on an appearance ticket returnable to Town of Catskill Court on Sept. 4 at 3:00 p.m.

On Aug. 3, Apy reported to State Police Catskill, where he was arrested and processed for criminal trespass in the third degree.

State Police was assisted by Centerville Fire District, City of Kingston Fire, Twin Cloves Technical Rescue Team, Cedar Grove Fire Company, Catskill EMS, Greene County Medics, Catskill Fire Department, Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Malden West Camp Fire Station Company.
