MILLINOCKET — On the evening of June 23, Sgt. Clayton of the East Millinocket Police Department observed a vehicle on Wassau Street in Millinocket being driven by Hunter Cote, 24.

Sgt. Clayton recognized Cote and knew he had a revoked driver’s license and was currently on two sets of bail conditions.

A traffic stop was attempted, but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed.

Due to unsafe speeds in a residential area, Sgt. Clayton decided to back down the pursuit and lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, Sgt. Clayton found Cote walking.

Cote denied operating the vehicle and claimed it had been stolen, though Sgt. Clayton had observed him behind the wheel.

After further investigation and information from witnesses, Cote was arrested.

Cote was charged with eluding an officer, operating after revocation, criminal speed, and violation of conditions of release.

He was transported to Penobscot County Jail, where he is currently being held.

A female involved in the incident was also charged with permitting unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Sgt. Clayton was assisted by Officer Hallett and Officer Perreault during the investigation.
