Illinois hiker dies after fall at Hunter waterfall

HUNTER — A 70-year-old Illinois man died after falling from a rock ledge at Kaaterskill Falls on June 20.

Jack Wersching of Park Ridge, Illinois, was hiking when he fell from the ledge onto stone steps of the trailway below at approximately 6:16 p.m., according to State Police.

Troopers from the State Police Catskill barracks responded to the report of an injured hiker at the falls, located on Laurel House Road in Hunter.

Wersching sustained severe injuries and received life-saving measures at the scene.

Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing.
