NEWPORT — Green Mountain Farm-to-School will kick off its summer meal program with a free block party on Thursday, June 26, from 3-6 p.m. at Gardner Park in Newport.
The family-friendly event marks the launch of The Lunchbox, GMFTS’s eight-week summer meal program operated in partnership with The Abbey Group.
Hosted in partnership with Newport Downtown Development, the celebration will include field games, conservation education and giveaways from more than 10 community partners, including Old Stone House, Memphremagog Science & Education Center and North Country Hospital.
Children 18 and under can receive free supper from The Lunchbox food truck, with adult meals available for $8.
The Lunchbox serves nutritious, locally sourced meals weekly in Irasburg, Barton and Newport. As a participant in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program, The Lunchbox provides around 4,000 free meals to children each summer.
The program also offers enrichment activities including arts and crafts, food education and a Market Basket table with free produce and recipes featuring local, seasonal ingredients.
“The Lunchbox allows myself and my children to try new foods, socialize, and fill our bellies,” one participant said.
The Lunchbox runs from June 24 through August 14, with weekly stops from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays at Leach Public Library in Irasburg, Wednesdays at Barton Public Library and Thursdays at Gardner Memorial Park in Newport. There will be no lunch service on June 26 in Newport.
“We’re excited to bring back the Block Party as a way to promote The Lunchbox and other local resources. It’s a celebration of community!” said Hilary Rosa, GMFTS Food Access Coordinator. “Whether you’re looking for a meal, something fun to do, or just want to try new foods—The Lunchbox has something for everyone.”
The event is sponsored by The Abbey Group, Community National Bank and other community businesses.
