Afton resident charged with possession of stolen UTV, weapon

AFTON — A Town of Afton resident was arrested May 27 after Chenango County sheriff’s deputies recovered a stolen utility terrain vehicle at a property on St. John Road.

Deputies said they, along with the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, were investigating the theft of a UTV reported stolen from Harpursville.

Detectives from both counties located the stolen vehicle at the Afton address, but noted it had sustained significant damage.

Richard A. Terrell, 39, of Afton, was arrested on charges of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property (felony), second-degree criminal mischief (felony), and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon (misdemeanor).

Authorities said Terrell was taken into custody without incident and arraigned in centralized arraignment court, where he was held without bail.

According to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, Terrell is scheduled to appear in Town of Afton Court at a later date.

The investigation remains ongoing.
