NEWPORT — RuralEdge has completed a community mural project featuring student artwork at two of its properties, Pierce Block in Barton and Lakebridge in Newport.
The six-month initiative, led by RuralEdge’s Community Building and Engagement team, was funded through a grant from the Vermont Community Foundation.
The project partnered with North Country Union High School in Newport and Lake Region Union High School in Orleans to provide students opportunities to create permanent public art installations.
At Lakebridge in Newport, Catriona Kinsey, a junior at North Country Union High School, designed and painted a 4-by-6-foot mural depicting Vermont’s four seasons and local activities.
The artwork now brightens the community room with vibrant colors and imagery reflecting Vermont life. Kinsey, who plans to pursue a Studio Arts degree at Concordia University in Montreal, received a scholarship through the project.
At Pierce Block in Barton, Ellectra Rolfe, a junior from Lake Region Union High School, created three 4-by-6-foot panels with a baseball theme honoring the Barton baseball field behind the property. The dynamic colors contrast with the building’s yellow exterior, creating a visual landmark. Rolfe also received a scholarship to support her animation studies at Champlain College.
“We are so proud of the talent and creativity shown by these young artists,” said Colleen DeMarie, Resident Support Specialist at RuralEdge. “Their work not only enhances our properties visually but also creates a deeper connection between our residents, our organization, and the communities we serve.”
RuralEdge thanked staff members Chad McCormick, Larry Chase, Alex Perron and Stahr Brown for installation assistance, and teachers Natalie Gaines and Stephanie Harper for mentoring students throughout the process.
