NEWPORT — Emergency crews spent over two hours investigating smoke at a Newport apartment building Tuesday, finding no active fire despite visible smoke coming from the structure.

Newport City Fire Department responded to 99 Maple Street shortly before 11 a.m. following reports of smoke in a second-floor bathroom, according to Fire Chief Kevin Lacoss.

Firefighters tore up flooring in search of the source but were unable to locate any flames.

Derby Line Fire Department was called to the scene approximately 45 minutes later to provide additional personnel.

Newport Ambulance Service stood by as a precaution, while Newport Police and Orleans County Sheriff’s Department closed Maple Street at the Union Street intersection.
