BANGOR — Two Bangor residents were seriously injured Friday night when their car crashed on Interstate 395, according to Maine State Police.

Troopers from Troop I responded to the single-vehicle crash at mile marker 1 at approximately 8:45 p.m. on May 16.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Devon Ireland, 23, was driving a 1992 Mazda Miata westbound when he failed to negotiate a turn and lost control of the vehicle.

The car went over the guardrail and came to rest upside down across both eastbound lanes of travel.

Lauren McCann, 23, a passenger who authorities believe was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained life-threatening injuries.

Ireland also suffered significant injuries in the crash.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors, according to police.

Both occupants were transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center for treatment.

Troop I was assisted at the scene by members of the Northern Field Troop, and the vehicle was removed by Union Street Towing.

The crash remains under investigation.
