NEWPORT — The Fitness Warehouse in Newport has experienced remarkable growth since changing ownership last September, with membership quadrupling and substantial additions to both equipment and services.

The gym has expanded its equipment inventory significantly, adding several machines, cardio equipment and free weights.

“It literally is a dream come true,” said Tom Lowell, co-owner of The Fitness Warehouse. “We’re ever expanding. We’re fortunate to be growing and we’re excited about that. We hope that our growth can foster other things.”

The facility has also undergone structural changes, converting one of its two office spaces into additional workout area. The remaining office now houses Healing Hands Massage, operated by Theresa Newcity, who began offering services this week.

Staffing has grown with the addition of Alayna Azur, a 19-year-old local trainer and Lake Region High School graduate who teaches five classes and offers personal training. She holds a professional certification and has been on staff for several months.

“We’re pumped to have her. She’s doing a really good job,” Lowell said.

The gym has expanded its class offerings with sessions available Monday through Friday in both mornings and evenings, plus Saturday classes. Beginner classes have been particularly successful, according to Lowell.

Summer promotions include a three-month open gym special for college students at $125 with a valid college ID, designed to attract students returning home for summer break.

One distinctive feature of the gym during warmer months is its large garage door that can be opened during workouts.

“You’re inside but you’re getting the fresh air at the same time, and I think we’re the only gym in the area that has a big garage door like that,” Lowell explained.

Looking ahead, the gym plans to introduce outdoor classes once warmer weather firmly arrives, incorporating equipment like giant tires and taking advantage of the seasonal change.

“Every time we get a new member, that reinforces the idea that we made the right decision and we’re headed in the right direction,” Lowell said. “We’re just so fortunate to be able to provide a gym of our vision to the area.”
