NEWPORT CITY — Newport City will hold a special election tomorrow, May 6, to fill a city council seat vacated when Rick Ufford-Chase was elected mayor in March.
Voters will choose between three candidates: John Monette, Adam Ortiz, and Carl King. The winner will serve the remainder of the two-year term, which ends in March 2026.
Monette currently holds the seat on a temporary basis after being appointed by the council. He has also been named chair of the Water and Sewer Task Force.
A petition submitted to the council triggered the special election.
With 45 years of experience as an attorney, Monette has represented municipalities and served on both Newport City and Derby planning commissions, the school board, and as a probate judge.
King, a 32-year resident active in veterans’ affairs, previously run for council, including in the recent March election.
The special election will use Australian ballot, with voting at the municipal building from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
