NEWPORT — The Newport City Council is seeking qualified volunteers to serve on two special task forces with six-month terms, while also looking to fill a vacant council seat.

The Special Task Force on Water and Sewer will review the water and sewer expense budget and provide recommendations by late April on avoiding a deficit in the 2025-26 fiscal year. The group will also develop strategies for installing water meters throughout Newport.

A second task force, focused on Financial Reporting and Fiscal Practices, will advise the council on financial reporting best practices, rebuilding cash reserves, reducing city debt and planning for capital expenditures.

Each task force will be chaired by a council member or designee, with the mayor participating when possible. All meetings will follow Vermont’s Open Meeting Law requirements.

Interested residents should submit a letter of interest and qualifications to the city clerk by noon on March 14 and attend the March 17 council meeting.

Separately, the council announced a vacancy and plans to appoint a member to serve until a special election on May 6. The appointed member will be eligible to run in that election for a term ending in March 2026.

Applications for the council seat are due by March 20, with interviews and appointment planned for a special meeting at 6 p.m. that day. The new council member must attend training in Montpelier on March 22.
