NEWPORT — The Vermont Housing and Conservation Board has awarded nearly $682,000 to four organizations for projects protecting water quality in the Lake Memphremagog watershed.
The grants, part of the second round of the Leahy Memphremagog Clean Water Program, include funding for education, infrastructure improvements and land conservation.
The Memphremagog Science and Education Center received $216,727 to enhance its Floating Classroom program and develop educational resources. The grant will also support Americorps positions and French-speaking volunteers.
Orleans County Natural Resources Conservation District was awarded $267,145 to replace three undersized culverts with bridges on a local farm, improving fish passage, flood resilience and water quality.
NorthWoods Stewardship Center received $15,450 for education and outreach events related to its Riparian Lands program, including youth education and student conservation training.
The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department was granted $182,500 to acquire approximately 197 acres of riparian land along the Black River in Albany and Irasburg for habitat protection and public recreation.
A third round of applications is open until March 24.
