Orleans County 4-H’ers earn top honors at regional dairy quiz bowl

LYNDONVILLE — Orleans County 4-H members captured top honors in multiple divisions at the 2025 Northeast Region 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl held February 22 at Lyndon Town School.

Derby’s Sloan Nelson won first place in the senior division (ages 14-18), with fellow Derby resident Eva Bury taking second. Emma Pothier of Newport Center placed fourth, and Reegan Kelley of Derby finished eighth in the same division.

In the 12-13 age group, Mya Marquis of Newport Center earned third place behind CJ McNeely of Lunenburg and Katelyn Sibley of East Montpelier.

Hannah Birch of Derby claimed first place in the 8-9 year old division, while Harlow Converse of Derby took third place in the 10-11 age group.

Four young Cloverbuds participated without formal scoring, including Ida Birch and Brody Daigle of Derby, and John Jenkins Jr. of Troy.

The Border Livestock 4-H Club represented Orleans County with a strong contingent including Hannah and Ida Birch of Derby; Emma Pothier and Mya Marquis of Newport Center; and Reegan Kelley, Sloan Nelson and Eva Bury, all from Derby.

Eli Lidback of Westmore placed second in the 10-11 year old division.

Derby resident Jared Birch served as quiz bowl moderator for the senior division, while Maddie Nadeau and Holly Converse, both from Derby, ran the competition for the 10-11 age group. Sarah Birch of Derby moderated the Cloverbud contest.

The competition, which drew 28 participants from across the Northeast Kingdom and beyond, tested contestants’ dairy knowledge through written exams and buzzer-style question rounds.
