GLOVERSVILLE — Firefighters from Gloversville and Johnstown responded to a structure fire at 29 North St. at 1:24 p.m. Monday.
Upon arrival, members of the Fourth Battalion found a two-family home with heavy fire on the second floor, extending into the attic.
Captain Josh Frye and firefighter Zachary Angus advanced a hose line to the second floor, encountering intense fire conditions. Battalion Chief Brandon Lehr then requested additional personnel.
The Johnstown Fire Department responded with two additional shifts, while the Berkshire Fire Department was placed on standby at the Gloversville station.
Crews battled the fire in frigid temperatures, with gusting winds and blowing snow complicating efforts.
Despite the conditions, firefighters contained the fire and prevented further spread.
All occupants who were home at the time escaped safely, though one pet was lost.
One firefighter was transported to Nathan Littauer Hospital for treatment and is being held overnight for observation.
Three adults displaced by the fire received assistance from the Red Cross.
The home sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage.
Firefighters cleared the scene and returned to quarters by 5:15 p.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Gloversville fire investigators and the Gloversville Police Department.
Gloversville and Johnstown firefighters were assisted by Lake Valley EMS, the Gloversville Police Department and the Gloversville Department of Public Works.
