NEWPORT — A 21-year-old Washington state woman faces federal charges in Monday’s fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Coventry, prosecutors said today.

Teresa Youngblut was charged with using a deadly weapon to assault a federal agent and discharging a firearm during that assault. She allegedly shot Agent David Maland during a traffic stop on Interstate 91.

According to court documents, Youngblut and her companion, a German national who died in the incident, had drawn law enforcement attention days earlier when hotel staff in Lyndonville reported them wearing tactical gear while armed. The pair was later spotted at a Newport Walmart where the man was seen wrapping objects in foil.

During Monday’s stop, both suspects were armed when Youngblut fired without warning at agents, prosecutors said. Her companion attempted to draw a weapon before being fatally shot by agents returning fire.

“The events leading to this prosecution tragically demonstrate how the men and women of law enforcement regularly put their lives on the line,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Michael P. Drescher.

Maland, a resident of Newport, was an Air Force veteran before joining Border Patrol.

Youngblut remains hospitalized and her court appearance hasn’t been scheduled.

The FBI is leading the ongoing investigation with assistance from multiple agencies including Vermont State Police and ATF.
