NEWPORT — A U.S. Border Patrol agent was fatally shot in the neck during a traffic stop Monday afternoon on Interstate 91 in Coventry, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed.

FBI officials issued a statement verifying that one U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed and a suspect died in the shooting.

A second suspect was injured and taken into custody, according to a statement from FBI Albany, which is investigating the incident as an assault on a federal officer. The FBI is working with Border Patrol and Vermont State Police to process the scene. Officials say there is no ongoing public threat.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and coworkers of our fallen brother in green in Vermont,” the National Border Patrol Council, the agency’s official union, said in a statement.

The southbound lane of I-91 remains closed between Exit 27 in Newport and Exit 26 in Orleans in what authorities describe as a “long-duration closure.”
