NANTUCKET — The Nantucket Police Department, in collaboration with local media outlets Nantucket Current and The Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror, issued a warning Tuesday about a resurgence of a phone scam involving individuals posing as police officers or court officials.
According to authorities, the scammers have been calling residents, claiming to be a lieutenant from the Nantucket Police Department or affiliated with Sheriff’s Court Services, and using real last names of actual police personnel to lend credibility to their ruse.
The fraudulent callers have been reportedly seeking donations or payments for supposed outstanding tickets, warrants, or court appearances.
The police department emphasized that they would never solicit funds or payment for legal matters over the phone.
Residents who receive such calls are urged not to divulge any personal information.
Instead, they should hang up and contact the Nantucket Police Department’s non-emergency number at 508-228-1212 to verify the legitimacy of any communication claiming to be from law enforcement.
The police urge the community to be vigilant against these deceptive tactics and to spread the word to help prevent potential victimization.
