1 min read

SALEM — Salem Police Department is alerting residents to a phone scam involving perpetrators “spoofing” the department’s phone number to deceive potential victims.

According to the department, scammers are using technology to make their phone number appear as “Town of Salem” on caller IDs.

However, the police clarified that while they do make phone calls for official business, they never request personal or financial information over the phone for unexpected matters.

Officials emphasized that they do not accept any form of payment via gift cards, cryptocurrencies, e-vouchers, or wire transfers during such calls.

The department advises the public to hang up immediately upon receiving such suspicious calls and to not succumb to pressure to act quickly.

Residents who are uncertain about the legitimacy of a call purportedly from the police should hang up and contact the department directly to verify.

The Salem Police Department reassured the community of their constant availability and commitment to addressing concerns about such fraudulent activities.
