Byfield man identified as victim in Parker River drowning

NEWBURY — A Byfield man has been identified as the victim of an apparent drowning in the Parker River, Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker and Newbury Police Chief Patty Fisher announced Friday.

David Harwood, 54, was observed by witnesses on Thursday entangled in brush in the river near Forest and River streets.

A bystander attempted to rescue Harwood but was thwarted by the rapid current.

Authorities, with the help of state and local agencies, recovered Harwood’s body late Thursday evening.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Newbury Police Department and the State Police Detective Unit of the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.

Officials have stated that they do not suspect foul play at this time.
