MILTON — A motorist was charged with impaired driving after causing an accident on Interstate 89 South near mile marker 102 on Dec. 22.

At around 11:15 a.m., state police reported assisting a disabled vehicle when a bystander informed a trooper about a driver in a 2015 GMC Terrain swerving erratically across the traffic lanes.

Jason Lesperance, 39, of St. Albans City, exhibited signs of impairment from a substance that was not alcohol during the incident.

To ensure public safety, authorities executed a rolling roadblock, during which Lesperance’s vehicle collided with the guardrail, veered across the road, and eventually stopped.

There were no injuries reported, and the vehicle sustained front driver-side damage.

Lesperance underwent a drug influence evaluation at the Williston State Police Barracks.

He is scheduled to appear in Chittenden County Superior Court to face charges related to operating under the influence and negligent operation.

Essex Police Department and Milton Rescue assisted the Vermont State Police during the emergency response and subsequent investigation.
