NORTHFIELD — A severe two-vehicle accident late last night resulted in the entrapment of one driver and a complex emergency response on Northfield Road, near the intersection with Purple Meadow Road.

At 10:44 p.m. last night, local emergency services were called to the scene of a head-on collision involving two vehicles.

Northfield Fire Department’s Car 1, Rescue 1, Engine 2, and Engine 3 responded promptly to the crash site.

Upon arrival, responders found a small SUV and a sedan had collided head-on.

The male driver of the sedan managed to get out of his vehicle by himself and was subsequently transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield by Northfield EMS for treatment.

The female driver of the SUV required extrication from her vehicle, a task that necessitated additional support from the Greenfield Fire Department.

After she was successfully removed from the wreckage, she was taken by Northfield EMS to Pioneer Valley Regional High School.

There, a landing zone had been secured by the Northfield Fire Department for her airlift by LIFE STAR to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

The crash investigation was conducted by the Bernardston Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police, who were both present at the scene.

Koch’s Automotive Inc was tasked with removing the damaged vehicles.

The road remained closed until the scene was cleared and subsequently reopened to traffic in both directions at approximately 1:10 a.m.

The successful and safe resolution of the incident was due to the combined efforts of all agencies involved.

The Northfield Fire Department expressed gratitude for the smooth and coordinated operation.
