Waltham officer and utility worker killed in crash, suspect flees in stolen police vehicle

WALTHAM — A police officer and a National Grid utility worker were killed Wednesday evening after a vehicle struck them at a construction site on Totten Pond Road, according to local authorities.

The incident, which occurred during a busy hour, also left two other National Grid employees injured.

Sources from NewsCenter 5 confirmed that a suspect involved in the crash commandeered a Waltham police cruiser and fled the scene, leading to a second collision near Winter Street.

State police reported that the suspect was apprehended after a foot chase and is now in custody.

Following the initial crash and the injury of the police officer, the suspect managed to steal the cruiser and crashed again on Winter Street, where the damaged vehicle was discovered.

No further details have been released regarding the identity of the suspect or the cause of the incident.

State police are continuing their investigation.
