Salem police make arrest in Loan Max armed robbery, kidnapping

SALEM — Police have arrested a man in connection with an armed robbery and kidnapping at a Loan Max store that occurred in September.

Nelson Perez, 58, was taken into custody by the Katy Police Department in Texas last night on a warrant secured by Salem Detective Joshua Dempsey.

Perez faces charges of armed robbery with a firearm, two counts of kidnapping, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The robbery took place on Sept. 27 at around 12:12 p.m. at the Loan Max located at 522 South Broadway.

The male suspect tied up two employees at gunpoint before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Detective Dempsey led the investigation, which involved multiple search warrants, witness interviews, and other investigative methods to identify and secure the arrest warrant for Perez.

His last known address was in Methuen, Massachusetts.

Perez is currently being held pending arraignment and an extradition request to New Hampshire.

The Salem Police Department extended their gratitude to the public and law enforcement partners, including the Massachusetts State Police, the Essex Police Department, the Katy Texas Police Department, and the US Marshals Service for their assistance.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges against Perez are anticipated.
