Pittsfield man arrested on murder charge

PITTSFIELD –– A Pittsfield resident was arrested on a murder charge on Thursday, September 14, following a fatal stabbing earlier in the week, according to Lieutenant John Soules.

Josiah Helmer, 27, was arrested at a Dalton Avenue home on an outstanding warrant charging him with murder.

The charge stems from a fatal stabbing that took place on Melville Street on the evening of Tuesday, September 12.

Helmer was booked at the Pittsfield Police Department (PPD) and is slated for arraignment in Pittsfield District Court later today.

The arrest comes less than 48 hours after the violent crime, thanks to a collaborative investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

The PPD Detective Bureau, PPD Drug Unit, PPD Anti-Crime Unit, PPD Patrol Division, Berkshire County Special Response Team, Berkshire County Sheriffs Department, and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit Assigned to the Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office all contributed to the investigation and arrest.
