Man dies after altercation with prison guards in Concord

CONCORD — Authorities are investigating the death of a 50-year-old man who died at the state prison in Concord.

On April 29, Jason Rothe was a resident at the Secure Psychiatric Unit.

The SPU is housed on the state prison campus but is a separate institution that is overseen by a medical director.

At around 12:55 p.m., Rothe was involved in a physical altercation with several corrections officers in the SPU.

After that altercation, corrections officers noticed that Rothe was not responsive and attempted CPR.

Despite those efforts, Rothe was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The cause and manner of Rothe’s death are inconclusive and are pending further investigation.

The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain under investigation.
