Fatal police encounter in Lacey Township

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ — A fatal police encounter occurred early Monday morning in the Lanoka Harbor section of the township, according to the Lacey Township Police Department.

The incident took place at approximately 2 a.m. in the vicinity of Hemlock Drive.

One individual sustained a fatal injury during the encounter with officers from the Lacey Township Police Department.

One police officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury.

Several additional officers were on scene and did not sustain injuries.

Police Chief Paul J. Sullivan Jr. said there is no active or ongoing threat to the public.

The scene has been secured by law enforcement, and authorities are asking the public to avoid the area if possible.

The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General is investigating the incident.

The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is conducting the investigation under a 2019 statute that requires the Attorney General’s Office to investigate all deaths that occur during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in an official capacity or while a person is in custody.
