MOUNT POCONO, PA — Human remains believed to be those of a missing Bethlehem man were discovered near the Mount Pocono Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facility on March 8, 2026.
The remains are believed to be Matthew Thompson, 43, of Bethlehem, who was reported missing on Feb. 15 at approximately 8:35 a.m.
Thompson was last seen on Feb. 13 at approximately 9 a.m. when he traveled to the Tobyhanna area to complete a real estate transaction in preparation for a pending move.
Thompson ceased communication via his cellular phone during the afternoon of Feb. 13.
His vehicle was later towed from a private roadway during the evening hours.
Investigators learned Thompson attempted to request an Uber ride later that night but left the location prior to the driver’s arrival.
Thompson was observed on surveillance cameras in the unit block of Fork Street in Mount Pocono during this timeframe, representing the last confirmed sighting of him.
An autopsy has been scheduled for March 10, 2026.
Preliminary observations of the remains did not reveal any clear or apparent signs of foul play.
Bethlehem Police investigators checked hospitals, correctional facilities and surrounding law enforcement jurisdictions within hours of the initial missing person report.
License plate reader systems were reviewed and Thompson was entered into national law enforcement databases as a missing person.
Early in the investigation, detectives believed there was a significant possibility Thompson may have been deceased prior to the missing person report being filed.
The Bethlehem Police Department was assisted by the Pocono Township Police Department, Pocono Regional Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police and regional search and rescue teams.
