Scam alert issued in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD, NH — Police are warning residents about a text message scam claiming to be from the New Hampshire Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Chesterfield Police Department said residents have been receiving text messages stating they have an unpaid traffic ticket and directing them to click a link to make payment.

The fraudulent messages claim to be a “Final Notice” from the DMV and threaten enforcement penalties including suspension of vehicle registration and driver’s license, according to police.

Police are advising residents not to click the link or make any payment.

The DMV does not send notices through text message, police said.

All legitimate correspondence from the DMV comes through the mail, according to the department.

Residents can report the scam to the Consumer Protection Hotline or call the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office at 603-271-3641.

The scam text references “New Hampshire Code 15C-16.003” and threatens additional penalties including a 35% processing charge and possible legal prosecution.
