Woman dies after fire in Shawangunk

SHAWANGUNK, NY — A 67-year-old woman died after a house fire on Plains Road in Wallkill on Thursday morning.

Ulster County 911 received a call at approximately 9:45 a.m. from the woman, who reported she was trapped inside the burning residence.

A second occupant, a 70-year-old man, was able to exit the structure.

When police and fire units arrived, the structure was fully engulfed in flames.

The woman was extracted through a window and had suffered apparent burns from the fire.

Both occupants were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Orange County for treatment of their injuries.

The woman succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

The man was later transferred to Westchester Medical Center for advanced care and was in stable condition.

The names of those involved are being withheld pending notification to next of kin.

The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit.

The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Town of Shawangunk Police Department, New York State Police, Wallkill Fire Department, Modena Fire Department, Gardiner Fire Department, Plattekill Fire Department, Shawangunk Valley Fire Department, Walker Valley Fire Department, Wallkill Ambulance, New Paltz Rescue Squad, Ambulnz and the Ulster County Department of Emergency Services.
